It has not been a month since we buried beloved Congressman Elijah Cummings. Now, weeks later we learn that his widow, Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, will have a preventative double mastectomy this week. Maya, who is currently the Maryland Democratic Party Chairwoman, has also decided to run for her late husband’s seat as United States House of Representative for Maryland’s 7th congressional district. 
Breast cancer runs in Ms. Cummings’ family. Her mother passed away from stage four breast cancer in 2015 and her younger sister was diagnosed last year with stage two breast cancer.
Breast cancer is a real challenge in our community. Let’s be supportive of friends and family facing this health scare and encourage them to share their stories. Like Maya, many continue to help our communities and achieve more professionally while fighting breast cancer.
